Physical Education

  • Mrs Hunt

    Mrs Hunt is the Physical Education (PE) subject leader at our School.

Intent

P.E. develops children's enjoyment, confidence and skill in physical activity, whilst promoting personal, social, intellectual and physical development. It is all about introducing children to the world of sport, which, combined with an enjoyment of exercise, will hopefully provide the foundations for a healthy, active adult lifestyle.

At Shilbottle Primary, P.E. promotes positive attitudes in children, helping them to develop a sense of fair play, honest competition and good sporting behaviour.  All physical education requires full, active child participation.  It provides success, irrespective of abilities, and varied learning experiences within a safe environment.

We believe P.E. should be considered as a vehicle to facilitate access to cross-curricular themes, skills and dimensions, rather than a subject concerned exclusively with the acquisition of motor skills and techniques.

Implementation

At Shilbottle Primary we aim to:

  • develop children physically, socially and intellectually through individual and group exploration.

  • develop the acceptance of the roles and responsibilities of team membership.

  • provide a safe working environment for children to participate and develop a sense of responsibility in physical activity.

  • foster an appreciation of safe practise

  • enable children to develop and explore physical skills with increasing control and co-ordination;

  • develop an increasing ability to select, apply and evaluate appropriate skills.

  • promote positive attitudes towards health, hygiene and fitness

  • teach children to recognise and describe how their bodies feel during exercise;

  • give children the opportunity to develop areas of their choice in extra- curricular time

  • develop the children’s enjoyment of physical activity through creativity and imagination;

  • develop an understanding in children of how to succeed in a range of physical activities and how to evaluate their own success.

The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met. Our medium plans give details of the units of work ensuring coverage and progression. These plans aim to ensure that an appropriate balance and distribution of work occurs during each term. PE at Shilbottle Primary School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventure. Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week, covering two sporting disciplines every half term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extracurricular activities. Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children

Impact

We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
